Every great hero needs a name that sounds like it belongs in an old tale. This page gathers 650+ fantasy male names with meanings, sorted by race and mood, from elf courts to dark dungeons. Each meaning is short, so the right name is easy to spot.

How to Choose the Right Fantasy Name
Picking from 650+ names is the fun part. But a few quick checks will save you from a name you regret by chapter three. Here is what I do:
Say it out loud twice. If you trip over it in your own kitchen, your readers and your party will too. Names get spoken more than they get read.
Match the length to the role. Kings and heroes can carry three syllables; the rogue who needs a quick nickname cannot. Short name, short fuse.
Let the sound fit the culture. Soft vowels feel elven, hard consonants feel dwarven. Mixing them on purpose is fine, mixing them by accident sounds like a typo.
Keep apostrophes and silent letters on a leash. One odd spelling is flavour. Four in a single name is homework for everyone at the table.
Test it with a title and a surname. Say the full name with “Lord”, “Captain”, or “the dragon-slayer” after it. If it still sounds good at full volume, it is the one.
FAQs
What is a good fantasy name for a male character?
For me, a good male fantasy name is easy to say, hard to forget, and honest about who the man is. A name like Kaelthar or Aldric tells you something before he speaks. If you are stuck, start with the vibe, noble, dark, wild, and pick from that section first.
What are good elf names for a boy?
Look for soft sounds and long vowels, they feel ancient without trying too hard. My own favourites from the elf list are Aelion, Elendrel, and Thalandor. They suit archers, princes, and any elf who is older than he looks.
What are some dark fantasy male names?
For dark fantasy names, Morveth, Velkor, and Noctis are the ones I reach for when a character needs a shadow behind him. Dark names work best when they stay short and cold. Save the long, fancy ones for kings, villains should sound like a door closing.
Can I use these names for D&D and games?
Yes, that is half of what I built this list for. The D&D section is sorted by class, and every other list works for games too. The generator at the top of this page is handy at the table when you need a name in ten seconds.
Do these fantasy names have meanings?
Yes, every name on this page comes with a short meaning next to it. First names and surnames alike. I think a name lands better when you know what it says about the character.
syeda marzia zainab runs Names Array, a names blog where every list is built around the keywords readers actually search. This fantasy male names list was written name by name. Every name carries its meaning with it. The name you pick already tells part of the character’s story.
What if a name could sound like a sword being drawn? This page has 300 cool warrior names with meanings for fantasy characters and gaming, from fierce and dark picks to funny and short ones. Every name is invented here, so any pick works for a hero, a villain, or a game profile. Cool Warrior…
